I was lucky enough to be able to enjoy the new Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner from Los Angeles to Melbourne with United Airline’s in their United Polaris Business Class. All in all I was very impressed with what United Airlines had to offer with this brand new plane and new upgraded business class.
The cabin has 36 business class seats, split in a 1 // 2 // 1 configuration, giving everyone direct aisle access and a degree of privacy which is very nice – especially on long haul flights like Los Angeles to Australia (14 odd hours).
The seat goes back into a fully flat bed, measuring 1.98 cm and is 53 cm wide, giving you plenty of room to spread out and get some sleep. United provides a soft blanket and medium size pillow to make you feel more comfortable. The only criticism I would have about the seat is that when it’s in the fully flat position the room for your feet is very tight… great if you lie on your back, but not much room if you prefer to lie on your side.
There are 3 toilets in the business class section (for 36 flyers) so you never really have to wait as one is almost always free. This ratio is very low compared to most economy class where you always have to wait in line to use the bathroom.
The inflight service was excellent on this flight and I found the United Airlines staff to be very friendly and very professional. They could not do enough for you. They seem to be trained to give you the right amount of small talk and then leave you alone to enjoy a movie or get some sleep.
The meals offered by United Airlines were also excellent, a good selection and all tasted great. As the flight left Los Angeles late I only had a garden salad, a main which was spinach cannelloni followed by a freshly made ice cream sunday complete with hot fudge for desert.
It was the best desert I’ve enjoyed in an aeroplane and a great way to end the meal before I went to sleep. For breakfast I opted for a lighter option of hot coffee and a smoothie as we landed into Melbourne. On the menu for breakfast with United Airlines were the normal culprits from eggs and bacon to pancakes to healthy muesli.
Each seat has a large personal tv screen, mounted on the back of the seat in-front.
The entertainment has a range of new release movies, box sets and tv shows, plus heaps of music options, it was good but not as comprehensive as other airlines.
United also gives a small amenities kit, with lots of goodies inside.
Would I recommend United Airlines and would I fly them again myself? Without hesitation I would certainly say yes to both. I found the overall experience to be very positive and feel United Airlines can be very proud of the new business class on their new Dreamliner.
